Kenai River Trophy Rainbow Fishing!

Upper Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

The upper Kenai River above Skilak Lake is a trophy rainbow trout fishery restricted to catch and release and a majority of the river up there is for non-motorized boats such as rafts and drift boats. The scenery is spectacular as well as the wildlife. And a trip through the Kenai Canyon will add a touch of white water as well as some exceptional fishing that only a few anglers each year experience. An early summer post-spawn rainbow like this one will add 3-4 pounds of weight in the fall and early winter as it gorges itself on salmon eggs in preparation for the long cold dark spell. An abundance of Dolly Varden are also present in the drainage and from the middle of June when the trout season opens to mid-August the river has sockeye salmon moving upstream to add more variety to the anglers' opportunities. Only a few guiding operations have been granted permits by the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge manager to take clients out to fish this special section of the Kenai and Early Fishing Guide Service is one of those.
